"Imagination is more important than Knowledge" Albert Einstein
Friday the 11th of November 2011 and Footprints Family Day Nursery had an exciting day in store for the Macclesfield and Bollington preschool children, a visit to the Buxton Opera House to watch the Mermaid theatre company's magical adaptation of Eric Carle's classic children's story 'The Hungry Caterpillar'.
Our day began with a relaxing coach ride over the Buxton hills, the autumn morning added to the children's excitement as they journeyed through the misty clouds admiring the scenic views and having fun counting the sheep and spotting wildlife along the way.
When we finally arrived at Buxton we explored the pavilion gardens, looking at the different breeds of birds and trip tapping over the bridges hoping the big bad troll didn't come out. There were water features, mountain streams and even a mini waterfall to look at, the ducks were very interested in all the little visitors as they followed us around waddling and quacking.
By 11am we had walked up a set of stone steps and assembled on the bass band stand, the breath taking views and sweet aroma from the nearby gardens provided the perfect setting for what was to follow, two minutes in stillness and quietness (or as quite as we could be!) as we remembered all the hero's who had given their lives for king and country.
Lunch time and the pavilion café offered us all the snugness we required as we enjoyed a cosy picnic filled with sandwiches, fruit and Kit Kat's. After lunch we made our way into the theatre and took our seats in the auditorium, the atmosphere was electric as we waited in anticipation for the show to begin! Curtains up and over the next hour we enjoyed three short shows, The 'Mini Cloud' and 'The Mixed Up Chameleon' were our appetisers making the children laugh and giggle and, the main course was to follow, 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar.' The children joined in by cheering and clapping the caterpillar as he journeyed through life eating fruit and growing until the story reaches its climax and he metamorphosis's into a beautiful butterfly.
Moral of the story children, eat your fruit and vegetables and you will grow up to be big and strong! Oh and possibly turn into a butterfly.
What a great day!
